Black cherry color of medium intensity with garnet highlights. Powerful, complex aromas: notes of red fruit preserves with lactic hints; toffee, sweet spices and toasted notes evoke its time in the cask. Aeration reveals mineral aromas, alongside biscuity notes, candied fruit cake and hints of aromatic herbs such as thyme. Sweet, voluptuous mouth feel. Well-structured tannins fill the palate. Good acidity present throughout, adding freshness. Very long, balanced with hints of dried fruit and wafers.

Description

Castell del Remei dates its origins back to 1780, the first year for which there is documentary evidence of vines planted in the estate. The wine was initially sold bulk and the estate began to sell bottled, barrel-aged wine in the second half of the 19th century. With the help of an oenologist, four grape grower families from Bordeaux began making wines and ageing them in American oak barrels, following French vinification methods. Castell del Remei was the first Catalan winery to put aged wine on the market under its own brand and the first in Spain to work with the French grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon and Semillon Blanc. The Castell del Remei wines soon earned widespread recognition, receiving numerous awards at international exhibitions. In 1921, major renovation work was carried out in the winery and an annex was built to make white wines. After the vineyards were replanted on the wake of the phylloxera pest, the estate achieved a plantation of over 400 ha of local and international varieties. By then, Castell del Remei had become the largest quality wine producer in Catalonia and its wines continued to receive awards, including the Gold Medal at the Barcelona Universal Exposition of 1929. At this time, Castell del Remei made a firm commitment to exports and set up a major sales network across the world. Personal commitment led the winery to make major investments in the 1980s to renew the vineyards, purchase essential winemaking equipment and consolidate a team of professionals who would guarantee that the quality was maintained throughout every stage of the process. This new drive positioned Castell del Remei as a national benchmark with a significant international presence. The Castell del Remei estate is made up of 400 hectares in an outstanding location. It has some notable buildings including the castle, the winery, the church devoted to the Virgin of the Remei and the restaurant. Today, Castell del Remei manages 140 ha of vineyards, of which it owns 70. In order to take advantage of the wealth and diversityof the designation of Origin, the other 70 hectares belong to local farmers, who receive advice and supervision throughout the year. The winery produces about 800,000 bottles a year, which are sold in almost equal parts on the domestic and export markets. The Castell del Remei wines enjoy widespread reputation both nationally and internationally and they have received numerous awards and excellent reviews from the trade press.
