The village of Marsannay is considered the “Golden Gateway to the Côte de Nuits”. The presence of vineyards is documented as early as the 7th century. The Abbey of Bèze, the Bishopric of Autun, and the Dukes of Burgundy owned vineyards there. The name Marsannay comes from Marcenniacus in 630 and from Marcennai en Montagne in 1375. It was certainly the Gallo-Roman surname Marcenius or the Celtic name for marsh. Longeroies comes from longe or “all in length” and roie or “furrow”. It would therefore be a vine all in length.
