Description
Alphonse Vautour, the great-grandfather of Jean-Marc Autran, vinified his wine in his cellar at the top of a small hill – Les Briguières – located south of Sablet, where he owned 6 hectares of vines. The cellar was named ‘Ténébi’, the name of the former owner of the house. Alphonse had to go down the hill, his mules loaded with barrels, to wait for the wine merchant to pass. If the merchant did not come, or did not buy his wine, he had to go back with his mules who often did not want to walk. This is why, in 1947, he built a new cellar on the road below, where the current cellar of Domaine de Piaugier is located.Jean-Marc Autran, great-grandson of Alphonse, took over the cellar in 1985, then managed by his father Marc. He undertook to expand his vineyard and developed bottled sales, assisted by his wife, Sophie. The cellar quickly became too narrow and in 1995 he began expanding it in order to mature and store his wines in better conditions. In homage to this family history, Jean-Marc dedicated a wine to his ancestor, the ‘Réserve Alphonse Vautour’, which comes from the original plots which belonged to him. Today, Domaine de Piaugier wines, from this small farm, are sold as far away as the United States, Japan and Brazil.
