“Vineyard 1” is a historic vineyard in the heart of Rutherford, the place that put Napa Valley on the world stage in the 1960s. A portion of it was planted in 1895 by Mrs. Thomas Rutherford herself, and it was later used by the legendary André Tchelistcheff to make wines for Beaulieu Vineyard. Planted to Clone 6 and Clone 4, under thin, gravelly soils, the resulting Cabernet Sauvignon reaffirms Tchelistcheff’s quote that “it takes Rutherford dust to grow great Cabernet”—a description of the dusty, elegant-textured tannins and minerality ofthe wines that result from the Rutherford AVA.
