A revelation and a true wonder! The ruby red colour is magnificent and takes on a deeper hue with age. The aromas are intense and evoke raspberry and wild cherry, becoming more complex with age: undergrowth, truffle, candied fruit. A sublime structure, with refined tannins. It is a perfect example of this ideal of elegance according to Drouhin. A remarkable balance and a lingering persistence of flavours on the palate. It is a wine that always leaves the greatest impression.

Description

In 2018, the reds are vivid, structured and aromatically expressive. They show a great balance between alcohol and acidity, a sign of a great vintage.

Vineyard

Producing commune: Vougeot.

Site: Clos Vougeot is a large vineyard (50 hectares – 125 acres) located bewteen Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny. Joseph Drouhin owns two parcels in this mythical vineyard, both on a mild incline with a due east exposure.

History & tradition: the most glorious and famous of all Burgundy vineyards. The Clos (French for « enclosure ») was first planted and surrounded by a wall at the end of the 12th Century by the monks of Citeaux. They built a castle which is now the seat of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin.

Soil: very diverse and a true mosaic, a mix of clay and limestone in various proportions.Site: on the hill overlooking the city of Beaune. This appellation should not be confused with Côte de Beaune-Villages (a blend of various villages from the Côte de Beaune)..

History & tradition: this is a particular wine since it comes from the vines of the Joseph Drouhin estate (1 hectares – 2.5 acres) as well as from the younger vines of Clos des Mouches and other Premier Crus of Beaune that have been declassified (a Beaune wine can be declassified into Côte de Beaune)..

Soil: chalky, not very deep. The slope can be steep and the exposure is South/South-East..

Drouhin estate: 1 ha. (2.5 acres).

Winemaking

Supply: this wine comes from grapes harvested on some parcels of the Drouhin Family Properties as well as from grapes and musts purchased from supply partners according to rigorous specifications.

Harvest: grapes harvested by hands in open-work crates. If necessary, a careful sorting is proceeded.

Vinification: whole crop harvest of 20 to 50% depending on the vintage. In accordance with the terroir and the profile of the vintage, we do 2 to 3 weeks of fermentation and maceration in small open vats, marked by punching of the cap and pumping-over. The yeasts are indigenous (natural). Pressing in a vertical press. Separation of the ends of the presses based on tasting.

Ageing: in oak barrels including 30% of new barrels.
The ageing lasts between 16 to 20 months.

Origin of the wood: oak grown in French high forest.

Throughout the ageing process, decisions are taken only after careful tasting evaluation. The data obtained is completed through technical analysis. As with every other Joseph Drouhin wine, absolute priority is given to the true expression of terroir and character of the vintage.
