Early pioneer Colonel John J. Bowman first explored Kentucky in 1775. Four years later he moved his family to Lincoln County where they were among the earliest settlers of Kentucky. He presided over Kentucky’s first county court and was also appointed the first military commander and governor of Kentucky County. He was the great, great uncle of Abram Bowman, founder of Virginia’s A. Smith Bowman Distillery. This single barrel bourbon whiskey commemorates the early American pioneer John J. Bowman. ABV 50%

Description

A. Smith Bowman Distillery A. Smith Bowman’s distilling roots date back to the years before prohibition, in Algiers, Louisiana. In 1935, after the Repeal of Prohibition, Abram Smith Bowman and his sons relocated to Virginia continuing the family tradition with the distillation of bourbon. The original distillery was located on the Bowman family homestead in Fairfax County, Virginia called Sunset Hills Farm. The distillery’s hallmark bourbon called Virginia Gentleman was first created in small-batches to ensure meticulous control over the quality of each bottle. In response to the rapid growth of Northern Virginia, the distillery was moved in 1988 and is now nestled in the historic city of Fredericksburg in Spotsylvania County, 60 miles away from the original location. The Distillery Today As a small and privately owned company, The A. Smith Bowman Distillery continues the time-honored traditions on which it was founded. Considered a micro-distillery by today’s standards, A. Smith Bowman produces an assortment of hand-crafted sprits distilled from only the finest natural ingredients and using the latest technology. This micro-distillery focuses on the production of premium spirits honoring the legacy of Virginia’s first settlers. Looking ahead the micro-distillery has innovative ideas for new and different small batch products of all sorts which will honor the rich distilling tradition dating back more than 60 years.

Tasting Notes:

This bourbon whiskey has been hand selected from some of the oldest barrels in our warehouse. Each barrel rests years on end while Virginia’s moderate, but ever-changing climate extracts the complex flavors from the oak and mellows the whiskey. When the time is right, these prime barrels are hand-bottled with care. This single barrel bourbon is 100 proof, but still smooth as the fall breeze. Its fragrant nose is followed by hints of toffee, leather, figs and almonds with a long dry finish. Drink straight or over ice.

Ratings:

Malt Advocate 87 points – Triple distilled. (Twice in Kentucky, once in Virginia.) Gritty and gripping on the palate, showing dry, vibrant oak spice (particularly warming cinnamon and mouth-coating vanilla), but with candied fruit, toffee, pot still rum, and caramel-coated nuts to keep it interesting. Polished leather and tobacco on the finish. (A Julio’s Liquors exclusive.) (Fall 2012) Reviewed by: John Hansell (Aug 2012)

Ultimate Beverage Challenge 96 points – An exquisite blend of butter-roasted almond, ripe peach, vanilla and dried lavender comprise the nose. Precise and focused on the palate with a distinct and subtle smokiness, followed by maple syrup and baking spices. the finish is rather smooth and delicate while it harkens back to the rich flavor of maple syrup.
